McLoud Teen's Gesture Makes Hard Week a Little Sweeter

Not every act of mentorship needs a title or a program behind it. Sometimes it just needs someone willing to show up.
Emma Eslinger, a junior at McLoud High School, recently took young Maudie out for ice cream after Maudie had a long, hard weekend. There was no occasion behind it, no fanfare. Just a McLoud teenager noticing a kid could use a lift, and choosing to give her one.
For Maudie's mom, the gesture meant far more than a sweet treat. Emma has become a real mentor in her daughter's life, the kind of older girl a young kid genuinely looks up to. Moments like these are a reminder of why mentorship matters so much for kids growing up in McLoud and throughout Pottawatomie County. Role models who show up change lives.
McLoud is home to plenty of people quietly doing good — showing up, noticing, mentoring — without ever expecting recognition for it. Emma's willingness to be that person for Maudie says a lot about the kind of community McLoud continues to raise.
