Shawnee Wolves Honor Local Heroes at Football Season Opener

Some nights, football is just football. This one was bigger than that.
On the 25th anniversary of September 11, Shawnee High School's home opener became a tribute to the first responders who serve Shawnee every day. Shawnee Public Schools used the milestone to honor the men and women who show up when the community needs them most, weaving that recognition directly into the biggest night of the young football season.
Serving as honorary captains for the game were Major Tyler Farley and Lt./Chaplain Nick Auld from the Shawnee Fire Department, alongside Lt. Russell Conner from the Shawnee Police Department. Before kickoff, the Shawnee Fire Department raised the flag over Jim Thorpe Stadium, setting the tone for a night that carried a little more weight than a typical home opener.

The local Shawnee Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) served as the game's sponsor, continuing its long-running support of Shawnee High School athletics. Over the years, the FOP has given more than $15,000 in scholarships to local students, investing in the same community its members serve on duty.
A quarter-century after 9/11, Shawnee chose to mark the anniversary not just with a moment of silence, but with visible, active recognition of the people who continue to answer the call locally — the firefighters, officers, and first responders who show up in Shawnee and Pottawatomie County day after day, long after the anniversaries fade from the headlines.
